In the boredom of the long and torturous wait for classes to start next week, I have recently reached the all-time rock bottom: late night sessions online watching episode after episode of Sex and the City on Youtube. I admit, it's not an addiction I'm necessarily proud of, but, no matter how shallow Carrie Bradshaw's tales can actually be, every episode manages to pop a question in my head, a new musing...What classifies as "funky spunk"? Is it basic good manners for a guy to pull out the kleenex before kissing you just after giving you head? How stupid can Carrie get, running back to Big time and time again? (That question was finally answered in season 5's "The Big Journey" - he's not that bad afterall...although I still would never have put up with him the first time around.) But, for the most part, the basic "what is normal?" questions which can pretty much be applied to anything in...life, and not just sex.
Well, Sex and the City, as entertaining as it can be, can't take up all the time space from midnight to dawn for several days in a row, so, as can be expected, my musings led me from one thing to the other, as per the joys of the internet and linking (as well as late night television, which is always hilarious!). After watching the v. limited number of Sue Johanson videos available on YouTube (such a shame - this woman deserves more publicity!), and still quite bored and curious, I decided to expand my research a little. Unfortunately, being no expert in searching for porn (boyfriend wasn't around to give me the 101 at the time), I had to be content with googling "porn" and see what I came up with. Fun exercise, at that.
Somebody please explain to me, what is it about American culture that turns frat parties into porn shootings? I expected trashiness, siliconed blondes in the most ridiculous "sexy" poses, and several close up shots of all kinds of positions, but is it naïve of me to say that I didn't expect the endless aray of videos of a bunch of stupid "huh-huh" frat boys getting off on this idiot girl humping a guy in the middle of the living room/in the pool, et al. It depressed me to think these girls actually exist out there, and Americans continue to wonder why the world thinks so little of them. (Another v. telling video on this subject - which I love - is this one of Sacha Baron-Cohen's Bruno sketches from Da Ali G Show.) There was, however, at least one video on PornHub.com which I thought really hit the mark in my search for the answer to "what is normal?": Nice Blond Chick gets fucked on this private video (don't let the title put you off - unless you're feeling rather prudish, in which case I don't recommend you read this post at all...hehe, boredom does this to people, sorry!).
Something really great I discovered however, was this photographer called Nick Karras, while watching a late night TV show on the softcore "men's channel" FX, where they interviewed him about his book Petals. That is one coffee table book I wouldn't mind having - I thought the idea was genius. V. tastefully done...some of the pictures look like black&white Georgia O'Keefe's. Or perhaps this book might sound more interesting: Pornogami (yes, it's exactly what it sounds like!). There was also this great educational website with some brilliant illustrations of different shapes vulva and penises: large labia, small labia, circumcised, uncircumcised, erect, flacid...I only wish I could find it again! I know it made me feel a lot better about myself - afterall, there is no such thing as normal, whatever the classic porn videos may say.
Meu deus, essas pessoas...
